My retarded state, Part MCMLXVIII
Oct. 1st, 2004 05:27 pmI got my absentee ballot in the mail yesterday, hooray... [which I'll be hand-delivering, since I'm sure it'll wind up getting "lost" if I mail it.] I was starting to wonder if it would ever get here.
I scanned through to see what all was on there. Glad I did, since there are two issues to vote on that make no sense -- one is about minibottles, but it's worded so poorly that I can't figure out which way I'm supposed to vote if I want to get rid of minibottles (even the "plain English" explanation) is of almost no help), and the second one is... ???... something about shareholders, and agricultural real estate, and tax assessments. I don't know. I'm going to have to do some research to find out what the hell it's actually about.
I was aghast to find that, in almost all the local races, the candidates (all but one of whom are Republican) are running unopposed. That just ain't right. I think that, in 2006, I'm going to find out what county seats are up for re-election, and if no one is running *I'm* going to run for one of them, just for the hell of it. I resent not having a choice in the matter. I know I won't win -- I just think unopposed races are inherently wrong. I mean, hell, one of them is for a congressional seat -- and we couldn't cough up someone to run against this guy? I mean, he's nice and all, but come on. (OK, correction, I wouldn't run for coroner, because I don't have the qualifications to do that job. But I'm sure I could figure out how to be a state house rep for our district, for example, or a state senator.)
Also, the candidates are listed in no apparent order. It's the same order for straight party, president/VP, and senator, so I'll give them credit for consistency. But here's the order it's in: Constitution, United Citizens, Green, Republican, Libertarian, Democratic.
What, did they put them in in the order they filed to get on the ballot? Because that sure as hell isn't alpha... nor alpha by presidential candidates' names.
My favorite part, however... in at least three separate places, they misspelled Libertarian as "Liberterian."
*sigh*
