I have a major apostrophe peeve. I saw it so often on signs when I lived in the South that whenever I see them misused, it makes my blood boil.
My other peeve is the use of quotation marks for emphasis. "NEW" and "IMPROVED!" As one comedian pointed out, this use of quotation marks can mean one of two things: either you mean it ironically, or you're quoting from another sign.
I just hate misspelling something that I should have gotten right the first time, and your post just made me have a D'OH! moment. I do feel your pain, though. I mean, don't people have dictionaries or know how to look this stuff up? Or when in doubt, spell it out?
Dig this (http://pics.livejournal.com/ghoulsis/pic/000081a2)... one of my very favorite, unintentionally-funny signs from my old town. I swear it's not photoshopped.
lolz... my favorite is still "your" and "you're"... it ticks me off like there's no tomorrow. then again, i shouldn't be talking, i'm not a native speaker. :)
And you know what? Until this moment, I didn't realize you're not a native speaker. Quite honestly, you seem to make fewer mistakes than most of the native speakers I see on LJ (and out in public). Good for you! I'm impressed.
spelling is important to me. i'm not a spelling nazi, but i do judge ppl by how they write. which is not very nice of me...
often i make the silliest mistakes (i'm dyslexic) and it just annoys the hell out of me. i end up editing my entries 10 times after i post them. and i re-read e-mails at least twice before i send them. mistakes slip through though.
I think I do the same thing. Generally, if I start to read fic and the grammar is so bad as to be distracting, I don't read anything else by that author. Maybe it's wrong of me, but there's a lot of bad fic out there and I only have so many hours in the day, you know?
I'm (mildly) dyslexic too, so I understand about the silly mistakes. It's frustrating, because usually when I write it the first time it looks right. And when I go back later, that's when I discover the error. Grr.
same here... it distracts me from the plot and often, if the grammar is bad, the rest won't be that interesting anyways.
the thing is sometimes i won't notice the mistakes even after i re-read the thing two or three times. i mostly switch the order of the letters, and i simply can't spot those things. ;'
