Dang, I'm tired.

I think this job might be a keeper, provided I can keep myself from getting fired. (Apparently they've been having staffing issues for some time now, so overtime has pretty much become required. And if the work doesn't get done on time because, hello, not enough people to do it? Then they start firing the analysts. I'd love for someone to explain to me on what planet this is effective management. However, given the recent hiring blitz, I'm hoping that they've figured out how boneheaded this strategy is and will finally have enough people on board to keep up with the work load.)

But! Thus far (aside from the very real threat of repetitive stress injuries) the job is pretty cool. I'll be in the main lab two days a week and working as a contractor at a Big Local Manufacturer the other three days of the week. I have yet to meet anyone who works at BLM who doesn't seem to be thrilled to work for them. The benefits alone are phenomenal. (Who knows? If I get sick of working at Teh Lab, maybe BLM would be willing to hire me on full-time somewhere if they have a vacancy. At least this way I'm getting my foot in the door.) But yeah, incredible work environment, and the people working in my lab are SO great. I'm very happy to be there three days a week. (Oh, and the contractor gig? Permanent, baby. Woo!)

I don't have to dress up! I can wear a t-shirt and jeans and comfy shoes every single day, so long as we don't have a scheduled tour or clients coming through, but even then it's business casual. They'll also pay for a pair of prescription lab safety glasses each year (up to $100). I ordered mine on Saturday, yippee!

And I don't have to deal with the goddamned customers!! Which is a major plus.

I don't have a cube, but I do have a desk. I can live with that, especially since we're expanding into the other half of the downstairs of the building. Maybe we'll get a bit more room. That would be nice. *fingers crossed*

This week was really hectic, what with starting a new job and having a sore throat while X suffered from a fever for three days straight, and all the associated child-care woes that went along with it. But we're hanging in.

I have comfy new shoes for work tomorrow, which are sufficiently dressy that I can get away with them on business-casual days, but they'll be my everyday work shoes. As bad as my feet hurt on Friday, I figured I owed it to myself to have some comfy shoes (they weren't cheap either, which I feel vaguely guilty about, but I'm sure I'll get over it). Added bonus: they look awesome with jeans.

In other (and far more irritating) news, I've gotten calls about two other jobs since I started working at Teh Lab. Figures. Where were you people six months ago when I wanted a lab job? *stabs*

And, the closing date for the lab job at the Big Governmental Agency is this week. I wonder if I'll get a call... if I do, I think I'll go interview just to see. It'd be more money, but I don't know if I'd jump ship. I do like where I'm at so far... but working at BGA there's at least the potential that I'd be more directly involved in the research end of things, which appeals to me. Hrm.

I've started singing in church choir. Which piggybacks onto the exceptionally strange news that I've started going to church on a regular basis. Yeah, I don't understand it either.

One of the women in my lab at BLM (or should I call it ACS for Awesome Contract Site?) is going to bring me a pattern for knitting a baby hat. Winter is coming, and X needs a winter hat. And he has a big head, so hypothetically I can make it just the right size to fit his enormous noggin. She swears it's easy, but given that I've never done anything but scarves... *trembles* Oy. Maybe I can work on it while I'm on breaks.

The work news sounds great! Congratulations! I hope it still keeps being wonderful. About the knitting...I suggest getting a yarn that stretches a bit since this is your first hat. That way you have a margin of error :>

With the exception of the sick thing, it sounds like stuff is going really well. That's great!

GOODY about the good parts of the job!

What church are you attending/singing in? I love choral music and I've thought about going to church just so I could sing in a choir again.

*Smite*

I'm so glad this is working out. And I'm glad that some of the other places are finally beginning to understand how awesome you are, albeit stupidly late.

(Catching up) Glad to hear things are going well, and I hope X is feeling better. Hats are easy to knit. I got a pattern for hats and booties and it went great. I hadn't made anything other than scarves before, also, so I was worried. You can do it.
