I just found out that my alma mater's alumni database was hacked. Contact information was compromised for something like 300,000 alumni, including, oh, 137,000 or so social security numbers.

On the plus side, Equifax makes it very easy to put a fraud alert on your credit report, which I just did.

If you went to Ohio University, you might want to put in a call. Link to OU's site about the breach is here.

OK, that's hugely sucky.

We are not amused.

So now I need to get my credit report in a month or so and make sure no one opened any accounts in my name during the time my credit was "open," so to speak.

Yeah, one more thing on my to-do list. Whatever. *stabs to-do list*

Yes Equifax makes it easy to put fraud alerts on your credit report, but the sad thing is no one pays attention to them. I've had experience in the matter and am not pleased.

Any suggestions on what else I can do, now that I know for a fact that my SSN was stolen? Did anything work for you? /desperate

I contacted all three credit companies and had a fraud alert put on my account. It lasts for seven years. The idea is that no one is supposed to send you unsolited credit offers (that doesn't work, I still get them) and that no new credit will be given under your name or number unless it is varified by you. You send them a copy of your phone bill and they use that number. It feels safe, but who knows. I'm stilling getting all sorts of unwanted credit card offers.

I also bought a paper shredder and use it!
