Well, the camera guy came out and looked in our line, and we got an estimate!
We have structural damage in our sewer line! Which means it needs to be replaced. (Just in time for my birthday, yays.) So yes, we're going to get our very own Big Dig, right in our front yard! (Yes, we'll take pictures. Why the hell not.)

All told, including what we've already spent... it's going to cost...

*drumroll*

$5000!!!! So congrats to all you smart folks who guessed it. Here's a cookie.

I think I need a tranquilizer.

Word to the wise: if you buy a house? Ever? Call someone to run a camera down the sewer line before you close on the house. Roto-Rooter says they'll do it for $210. It would have been money well-spent, and I wish we'd known such a thing was possible before now. Oy.

Ye gods that sucks. I was catching up on your plumbing woes earlier today. I wish I could do something to fix it all. Ugh.

*smites shitty plumbing*

*hugs you tight*

OMG! :~( *hugs* Did the previous owners disclose the (obvious) drainage problems to you before you signed on the house? Even if they didn't know about the structural damage, I find it hard to believe they didn't recognize the problem. IMHO, it sounds like the previous owners knew something (expensive) was wrong, but wanted to pass-the-buck to you guys. >:-/

Just another thought, but check with your municipality/township office to see if they'll cover part (or all) of the cost for repair to the sewer lines. Yes the sewer may run through your property, but if it's the town infrastructure you're repairing, shouldn't the town be footing part of the bill?!

They didn't disclose it, but again... the drains weren't backing up when we moved in, so there's no way to prove if they knew about it. I feel certain they did, but proving it would be a whole other ball of wax.

As for the city paying for it, they won't. It's on our property, so it's our problem. Once it gets into the city's right-of-way, from what I understand, it becomes their problem. (That's why we're only replacing it to the sidewalk, and not all the way to the main.)

Geez. That completely sucks. I'll definitely take that advice to heart when I'm looking for a house. Hope that it doesn't hurt ya'll too much.

Five grand? Hurts pretty damn bad, to be honest. But what can we do? Gotta have plumbing. It's either fix it now or fix it later, and hope that we don't have a catastrophic failure between now and then. Best to just do it now and get it over with.

Yeah. I really couldn't think of anything else I would have rather done with that five thousand dollars.

In a way, it is a waste, because it doesn't exactly add to the home's resale value. It's not like a new roof or a new furnace. No one thinks about sewer lines until they don't work anymore.

Do you happen to have any sort of 1-year homeowners' warranty? Does home owners' insurance possibly cover this?

We do have a home warranty, but it excludes sewer. Of course. And I seriously doubt that homeowner's insurance covers this sort of thing, since it would be considered "maintenance" (much like replacing one's roof or windows).

Geez, that sucks. I'm so sorry it turned out to be the sucky end of the spectrum. ::joins everyone else in smiting plumbing::

Ouch. That? Lotta moula :( Sorry to hear about the sewer line. At this point, I almost wish you would have just gotten the shit geyser because of a blockage in the drain instead of needing it fixed. *HUGS*

shit! well that kind of sucks!

the good news is that it won't back up anymore after they fix it. :)

Yeah, at least we won't have to worry about it for a good long while. And they guarantee their work for five years, which is something most other companies won't do.

But still... crap. Crap, crap, crap.

which is nice, because you REALLY don't want to do this every couple of years. :)

another good thing is that it's not worse. your whole bathroom could have exploded or something, and then you would have to pay for that too. these things can get really nasty, really fast.

*still trying to look at the bright side*
